The mystery of the death by pigeon pie takes place in Victorian England in Hampton Court Palace, where a number of eccentric members of British society have been granted grace-and-favor homes, including Princess Alexandrina, who was left homeless and destitute after the death of her father the Maharaja of Brindor. Mink, as she is called, must investigate a death by arsenic poisoning to save her maid-of-all-work, Pooki, from being arrested. Light and airy.
I enjoyed this book (and not just because I was reading Sophie's Choice at the same time and needed something light hearted). Stuart had the right amount of mystery of her characters as well as of the murder, and a nice mix of historical notes and whimsy. Don't you just love British names like Mr. Wildgoose or titles like The Keeper of the Vine? If Wildgoose had moved to the US his name would have been changed to something like Gander. And I was so pleased to learn that even now there is still a Keeper of the Vine!
