Instruments of Darkness, by Imogen Robertson

A new series, featuring Harriet Westerman, the wife of a British naval officer who is running her household and raising her children with her younger sister, while her husband is at sea; and Gabriel Crowther, an anatomist and recluse, who she recruits to help her solve a neighborhood mystery.  There were some interesting bits about the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the British perspective on the American Revolutionary War.  The core mystery, however, is a little over the top.  The bad guys are very very bad, and the good guys are saintly.  Sordid little secrets abound.
