Grave Gourmet, by Alexander Campion
This book is the opposite of hard-boiled. A light confection. The main character, Capucine Le Tellier, is a 28-year old police lieutenant in Paris, married to a food critic, Alexandre de Huguelet. She wants to get out of the dull forensic accounting work she's been doing and has the opportunity when a bigwig from Renault is found dead in a three-star restaurant. She dresses in vintage couture, eats in fine restaurants, feels like crying with frustration, and gets cranky with her husband. She does manage to shoot suspects and understand the necessity of smacking suspects in the head with directories. Her police colleagues are all pretty interesting, and she has a flamboyant cousin who seems to be in espionage.
