Criminal Paradise, by Steven M. Thomas
What a revolting book! I guess one shouldn't expect a book about the California sex slave trade to be uplifting. I liked the descriptions of the Orange County locales, but disliked the absurd plot, pervasive rascism, conflation of love and obsession, and disgusting characters. Self-interest was the main motivator of every character, and the only one for most. The main character, Robbie Rivers, lacked honor, loyalty, or responsibility or guilt for the damage he caused to the innocents. Unlike most of the other characters, he also lacked a sadistic streak. Even Mrs. Pilly, his aged landlady, failed to act honorably, and his dear old friend Reggie is essentially scum. I will certainly avoid all of Mr. Thomas's future efforts, and might even avoid the authors who spoke well on his behalf. And Patrick Lawlor was a dreadful reader. Hiss boo.
