The Amateur Historian, by Julian Cole

There were things about this book that I liked. The Rounder brothers, Rick and Sam, are good company. Sam is a York police chief inspector with an unhappy marriage. Rick had also been a York policeman when years ago he watched an unstable man set himself on fire after killing his stepdaughter and cutting off part of Rick's finger. Afterwards Rick traveled the world, spent time in Australia where he met half-American/half-Australian Naomi, whom he brings back with him to York. In York, he sets up as a hopelessly sleasy private detective. The relationship between the brothers is central to the series. The mystery involves a kidnapped little girl from present day and another little girl from a previous century and the amateur historian who obsesses about her. This part didn't make a lot of sense to me.
