The Transcriptionist, by Amy Rowland

A fascinating little book, featuring Lena, the last and almost forgotten transcriptionist at the New York paper, The Record.  Lena reads a newspaper story about the death of a blind woman who swims the moat surrounding the lions' den at the Bronx Zoo to be devoured by the residents and realizes she had met the woman on the bus just the day before.  She breaks rule after rule trying to investigate and understand this death.  Wry, touching, beautifully written.
