The Outcast Dead, by Elly Griffiths

I love this series, its characters, and the complex and changing relationships among them.  On an excavation near her Norfolk home, forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway finds the bones of a woman believed to be Mother Hook, a one-handed childminder who was executed in 1867 for the murder of one of her charges.  Ruth is brought in as an expert for a television program called "Women Who Kill," and learns that in an age of resurrection men and high child mortality, Mother Hook might have been innocent.  Modern threats to children bring DCI Harry Nelson and his team into the picture.
