The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman writes some of the creepiest books around, and builds and sustains the creepy just seconds short of too long.  A suicide lets a creature into this world, and the creature tries to make people happy by giving them whatever they want or think they want.  Only the Hempstock women and one little lonely boy stand in her way. Doesn't sound that creepy does it?  But it is.
