The Descendants, by Kaui Hart Hemmings

When the book begins, Matt King's wife is in a coma, his older daughter is in boarding school, his younger daughter is hanging out with him at his wife's bedside, and his cousins are waiting for him to sell the family property on Kauai and make them all rich.  Matt tries to be good -- good husband, father, friend, trustee -- with very mixed results.  It isn't surprising that the book can be sad, but the humor takes the reader by surprise.  The movie follows the book quite closely, until it heads into some very dark territory.
