Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is sort of a mess. He drinks too much, obsesses too much, and gives too little in his relationship with Sarah. Even though he has been warned off the case, has damaged his hand while chasing ATV-riding trespassers, and knows something is troubling his girlfriend, he can't stop following the leads in the murder of a young woman from the city. His self-awareness doesn't stop him for a second being a self-destructive jerk. Doiron writes with textbook earnestness about the work of a game warden, the dangers of ATVs, and life among the rural poor.
Doiron is such a good writer that I feel as if I'm riding along with Mike down those rural Maine roads. Still finding it hard to accept someone driving all day (and getting into scrapes) with an unsupported broken wrist. I've had one of those and it's totally useless outside of it's cast ( not to mention the pain). His writing keeps me engaged, though, and I can't wait for his next one.
