Bad Chili, by Joe E. Landsdale
Landsdale has written some outstanding books -- The Bottoms (2000), Sunset and Sawdust (2004), Lost Echoes (2007), and Leather Maiden (2008), to name a few. But I just don't get the appeal of the Hap and Leonard books. They are so raunchy, so unlikely, and unsubtle. In this book, Hap is bitten by a rabid squirrel, falls in love, and must find the killer of Leonard's lover Raoul. Not to mention the torture, tornado, and many headless corpses. And the violence, unending and grisly.
