Mother Love, by Maureen Carter

Sarah Quinn, the Ice Queen Cop, returns with her nemesis, the purely opportunistic journalist, Caroline King.  They are both racing to locate an abducted teacher, Olivia Kent, who has been in the hands of a sadistic kidnapper for many days before her absence is questioned.  Creepy, smart, briskly paced, with a pinch of sardonic humor -- Carter writes a fine mystery.
