Ice Hunter, by Joseph Heywood

I think this was the first in the Woods Cop series, and it made me want more.  I like Heywood's characters, Grady Service, a Conservation Officer (CO), his coworkers, his lovers, and his just-a-bit-too-perfect dog.  Heywood seems to want the reader to know what a CO's life is like, so he throws in all of the mundane interactions with the hunters, fishermen, drivers, and Upper Peninsula residents, whether they advance the main plot line or not.  The mystery involved some shady land deals and near illegal mining on public lands, and the potential of rumors of diamonds to destroy the Mosquito Tract wilderness area.
