Faces of the Gone, by Brad Parks

Another good one, and quite happily a couple of years old, so Parks has a more recent book out and another due in March.  Parks was a newspaper reporter, as is his main character, Carter Ross.  In the series debut, Ross is assigned to cover the execution-styled death of four drug dealers, and finds that each sold a brand of heroin called The Stuff.  Ross is endearing -- funny, self-deprecating, fearful but somehow dauntless.  Parks paints a gritty but human Newark.

  1. I really enjoyed this one. Good writing, a bit of humor, logical conclusions, a likeable lead character. I loved the business model for the Browns. The world had better watch out if any of those gang members decide to go to business school! Drugs? Phooey! DVDs are where it's at, bro, until the everyday people get streaming video.
