Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead, by Sara Gran

Sara Gran has brought magical realism to the mystery genre, with resounding success.  She describes the grit, heartbreak and pervasive danger of New Orleans a year after the storm with a sharp-eyed honesty, but mixes humorous and magical elements into the solving of the mystery of a missing assistant district attorney.  It's amazing that she can follow a fairly traditional mystery structure when clues fall out of the sky and in through Claire's dreams.  Pretty great reading.
