Fade to White, by Wendy Clinch
There's a scene in the book where the main character, ski-bum Stacey Curtis is blissfully night skiing down a perfect untouched off-trail run and hits something hard which causes her to fall face down, thrown from her skis. The whole book was like that for me; I was blissfully reading along, enjoying Stacey's love of skiing, relations with Chip the ski patrol guy, Guy the police chief she boards with and even her ex-fiance Brian, when ka-blam I realized that the mystery was completely absurd, and there was no way to save it from its silly self, and almost immediately Clinch ended the book.
