To Fetch a Thief, by Spencer Quinn

The Chet and Bernie mysteries, written from the perspective of Chet the police dog dropout, are fun.  Chet's tendency to get distracted by a smell, a Slim Jim, or a word that reminds him of food, and his ability to judge people based on their smell, smile and petting skills are endearing.  The mystery of the missing circus elephant was secondary, but still almost engrossing.
