The Janus Stone, by Elly Griffiths

I love this series, which offers humor, suspense and atmosphere and a wealth of information about Norfolk, archaeology, and the Romans and the Celts of England. The lead character, forensic anthropologist, Ruth Galloway, is smart and brave, funny and aware of her contradictions, and now pregnant. DCI Harry Nelson is another rich and textured creation -- loving, loyal, conscience-stricken, sometimes insensitive. Griffiths never does the expected thing with her relationships, be they work, family, or love relationships, and there are many to plumb in upcoming volumes. The mystery is a little implausible, the tying up of the loose ends requires more than one person to have two identities, but still the book held my attention tightly.

The series began with The Crossing Places.
