The Devil Amongst the Lawyers, by Sharyn McCrumb
I like McCrumb and the Ballad novels, but I didn't so much like this one. Though there was based on an extent on the 1935 trial of Edith Maxwell, a Blue Ridge Mountains school teacher accused of killing her father, the book was primarily about the perfidy of the newly rising national press. Their arrogance and preference for a good story over a true story is a sore that McCrumb never ceases to pick at. Other historic events such as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the hanging of the elephant for murder, Bonnie and Clyde's death, and Pretty Boy Floyd's murders illustrate the role of the mass media in creating and distorting news, as does their depiction of the people and rustic way of life of the Blue Ridge mountains residents. Nora Bonesteel makes a brief appearance as a young woman.
