Craig Johnson is a remarkable writer. An engaging cast of characters populate his books: Sheriff Walt Longmire, Deputies Victoria Moretti and Santiago Saizarbitoria, Henry Standing Bear, and Dog. Even though his characters' voices, qualities and personalities are well developed by this his sixth book, the tone of each book is distinctly different. I recall
The Dark Horse being poetically melancholy, and
Another Man's Moccasins creating a brooding tension, but
Junkyard Dogs is light and humorous and quick paced. The story involves murders, underhanded real estate and marijuana production. A few highly memorable scenes: Vic dancing to Lucinda Williams and Walt's bruised and battered body being caught in the avalanche of junkers. I appreciate Mr. Johnson's ability and willingness to surprise me.
