The Year of Magical Thinking, by Joan Didion
Written a year after Didion's husband John Gregory Dunne died, this book offers an unsparing look at grief and mourning. She does a review of psychological literature and even etiquette books to place her own experience in the realm of normalcy. She states what she remembers and what she doesn't remember. She repeats herself quite a bit, perhaps to reflect the cyclical nature of grieving.
