Plantation Shudders, by Ellen Bryon

Several hundred people seem to have liked this book, and it was nominated for a couple awards.  I am at a loss about why that should be so.  The characters are caricatures, the plot leaden and predictable, the relationships annoying, and the tone gratingly moralizing.
