Marriage of Opposites, by Alice Hoffman

Who knows whether the real Rachel Pomie Petit Pissarro was anything like Hoffman's Rachel,
though Hoffman tried to incorporate all the facts known about her life and that of her son, the artist Camille Pissarro.  Born on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands in 1795, Rachel chafing against or sometimes outright fighting against the dictates of a Jewish community governed by rigid social mores and a fear of garnering attention.  As a middle-aged wife and mother in Paris she is just as unbending.
