Unseen, by Karen Slaughter

George Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Will Trent is undercover at a hospital, looking for connections to Big Whitey, a mysterious almost mythical drug king pin, unbeknownst to his lover, Sara Linton, who is at the same hospital visiting her stepson, Jared. Police officers, Jared and his wife, Lena, were attacked in their home by two gunmen, and everybody thinks that somehow Lena is to blame.  For me, Slaughter's books are about a set of lovely wounded characters that I've come to care about, particularly because of their loyalty to -- and often misguided attempts to protect one another.
