My Second Death, by Lydia Cooper

One thing that seems clear right now -- I will be reading everything Lydia Cooper publishes for the foreseeable future.  What a book!  Beautifully written, very compelling, fascinating characters, and a bit of humor.  Mickey is a medieval historian working on her dissertation, teaching uninterested students, and dealing with a bad past and a mental disorder that has been diagnosed all over the DSM IV.  Both caresses and small talk are forms of torture for her, she's perpetually resisting the temptation to kill or maim someone, and she says "fuck" a lot.  She is dragged into two mysteries:  an address delivered to her campus office where she finds a murdered and flayed homeless man and the mysterious death of an art student's mother ten years previously.
