In Search of Mercy, by Michael Ayoob

Holey moley, what a twisted little mind Michael Ayoob has.  Probably one of the most grisly and cynical books I've ever read.  Poor Dexter Bolzjak is trying to live with a horrific assault and molestation that took place when he was a hockey superstar in high school, tries to help an alcoholic old man find the love of his life, and along the way is betrayed by pretty much every other character we're introduced to in the book.  It is a compulsively readable book, maybe because I just wanted to be done with it.  Winner of the Private Eye Writers of America Best First Private Eye Competition -- they must be a twisty group of writers as a whole.
