Backyard Saints, by Joshilyn Jackson

Jackson deals with some pretty grim territory -- domestic violence, dysfunctional families, child abandonment, child abuse -- but she doesn't treat it like a foreign land populated by people whom you'd never know or wish to know; it's all too real and around the corner.  An irreverent humor breaks through often enough to keep one reading and hopeful that everything will work out.
