Night Kill, by Ann Littlewood

Littlewood was a zookeeper, and this mystery, set in a small zoo in Vancouver, Washington, resonates with authenticity.  She has a great deal to teach about zoo keeping, which frankly seems like a lot of hard, smelly, repetitive work.  Iris Oakley, the main character, is appealing and quite human (read: hard-headed, bitchy).  I'm not sure where Littlewood is going with the series, but I might hang around to see what happens next to Iris, and the other interesting zoo keepers and animals.
