The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz, paints a horrific picture of the Domican Republic under Trujillo. It's none too gentle about the immigrant experience of Dominicans in New Jersey either. The sense of doom is prevasive -- you know picking up the book that Oscar is doomed, but the fuku generated by Christopher Columbus haunts all the other members of his family too. The book has a Latin sense of love as obsession, but Oscar does spend time getting to know his great passion before dying for her.
Reading by Jonathan Davis with Staci Snell was quite well done.
